A few years ago I received a call from a gentleman enquiring about our self defence classes. The conversation was similar to most we receive. What is the duration of the classes, the availability, curriculum? etc etc.
Just as the conversation was coming to a close he said, “just one last thing that may be a problem”, “what’s that”? I asked
“I’m in a wheelchair, will this be a problem with training”?
“Not at all” I replied.
Apparently he had called a few other schools who unfortunately couldn’t accommodate him or his requirements.
I have trained in many systems and situations over the past 20 years, however this was going to be a new challenge for me. I knew from the get-go my new student would be teaching me just as much as I was going to be teaching him.
An Inspirational Self-Defence Student
Each lesson brings new challenges. However, I only needed to adapt small aspects of the Hard Target curriculum to suit the needs of my new student. Firstly, his agility and strength genuinely surprised me and almost two years later I’m delighted to say he is now training towards his instructors diploma and we have become firm friends.
To see how this man challenged his fears and disability is absolutely inspiring.
The training addresses many self protection tactics as well as defence skills, from everyday situations, such as: Protecting ones personal space in public areas and transport, understanding the ‘bad guys’ body language, release from grabs, chokes and strangles. All the way to dealing with abductions and weapons defence.
If you or a loved one is a wheelchair user, have a read of Dave’s testimonial below. I think this underlines that we are only limited if we choose to be.
In Dave’s Own Words
Before starting self defence with Hard Target, I always wondered what I would do if somebody attacked me when I was out. Rather than waiting for it to happen I decided to find someone who could help me prepare for such an event. I called a few self defence schools but as soon as I mentioned a wheelchair the conversation quickly shut down. Then I called Hard Target, straight away it was a different atmosphere. I set up a day for my first one on one session and looked forward to starting. I went in with no expectations partially cause I had no idea what to expect. To my surprise the place had a very friendly, family, home feeling. I didn’t feel like I was in some testosterone fuelled boot camp. It was extremely welcoming. From day one I was very involved with my program and my instructor Aidan never claimed to know everything, he has always welcomed my input which I think is a big reason why he is so good at what he does. The main thing I have gained in the last year training with Hard Target hasn’t necessarily been physical skills but awareness and knowledge of how to avoid being an easy target. My confidence has increased hugely and my overall quality of life has improved. In my opinion you can’t really put a price on that. I would encourage other wheelchair users to give it a go, you’ll be surprised how beneficial it is and how much more empowered you’ll feel.
