Congratulations to everyone who took part in last weekend’s 2 Day Self-Defence course. The first introduction course of 2015 will remain in my memory for many reasons.
We had new people training with the more experienced. All my regular students did an inspiring job guiding and encouraging the newcomers.
When presenting these courses I always strive to bring something new to all in attendance. As it’s a beginners course the curriculum always includes the bedrock techniques and skills that Hard Target was founded on.
Awareness, understanding of the criminal mindset, pre-cursors of attack, protecting personal space and protection drills dealing with common attacks, chokes, punches and strangles, etc.
At the beginning of Day One, I invited the students to come to the front of the class and explain to the group why they booked onto the course. I have done this in the past; however this weekend (in particular) will remain in my memory.
Some spoke of previous attacks and altercations. Others spoke about chronic depression and how the school has helped them.
I was very honoured and humbled to be part of this. When I founded the school over ten years ago, one of my (main) objectives was to build a business that would be a place for spiritual growth. A school to teach people how NOT to fight. A place to test one’s will and character. A dojo founded to help master (not only) techniques but to achieve a master’s mindset – and to do so, in a safe and controlled manner.
I felt I was on the right path when I closed the door of the school behind me as I left on Sunday evening.
The day ended with a surprise birthday cake for one of my students. James was 16 today. A young man that I am so honoured to have in Hard Target. His character, integrity, eagerness to learn and impeccable manners are inspiring and uplifting to all in his company.
To quote my colleague Albert (fellow instructor) who I think summed it up beautifully when speaking about all our young gentlemen students. “I have a teenage daughter and if she were to choose a boyfriend I would be very happy if she was to bring any of you guys home to meet me, because I know she would be safe and always respected.” I couldn’t agree more.
I am forever grateful to all my students for allowing me to do what I what I love most… teach.
As I finish, I am thinking of my students and I am reminded of this quote: “So often you find that the students you are trying inspire are the ones that end up inspiring you.” – Sean Junkins.
I would like to dedicate this article to James and Brandon.

Testimonials – January 24th & 25th
“I really enjoyed the course. I wasn’t sure what to expect to be honest but I am so glad I completed the two days. I found the grappling difficult but so important to get an idea of how it feels to defend yourself on the ground. It was great value for money.
I will definitely attend a weekly class.” – Paul Wheelan
“My Dad recommended I attend the course and I’m so glad he did. I was very nervous at first but the professionalism of the instructors put me at ease. I loved every part of it and will be attending the weekly classes going forward.” – Brandon Mc Hugh
